Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to round out their regular season with a 3-1 victory over Talladega at a rainy Oglethorpe Track and Field Monday evening. The victory means that the Stormy Petrels finish the regular season with a 3-11 mark.
The Petrels got off to a fast start, taking the lead in the game's 13th minute after a good opening stretch. Senior forward Laura Betancourt sent in a corner kick which was punched out by Tornadoes goalkeeper Eyanee Donaway, but the Talladega keeper punched it right into the path of senior forward Jasmine Jakes, who volleyed the ball past Donaway for her third goal of the year and a 1-0 lead. The Petrels continued to press, outshooting Talladega 7-4 over the course of the period, but the game went into halftime with a 1-0 scoreline.
The Petrels dominated the second period from a shot and possession standpoint, outshooting the Tornadoes 13-2 over the stanza, but it was the visitors who nabbed the game's second goal, tying it up in the 49th minute when the ball landed at the feet of Jamila Brooks after a corner kick. The Petrels continued to fight, though, and soon imposed their will on the contest.
They took the lead back in the game's 69th minute when junior forward Beatrice Menjor had the ball bounce to her after a corner kick and hammered it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Petrels held onto that advantage for the next 15 minutes and then put the game away in the 87th minute when Jakes broke through on goal, fired a shot that Donaway was able to save, and senior midfielder Jessie Gregerson crashed the net and got the game-icing goal, her first of the season.
For the game, the Petrels outshot the Tornadoes 20-6, including an 11-4 mark in shots on goal. They also took seven corner kicks to Talladega's one. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Craig recorded two saves and her first win of the season, while fellow senior goalkeeper Caitlin Hollis stopped a shot, as well, in her 13 minutes of action.
"I was very happy with the performance today, especially with the pressure we applied in the second half," said Head Coach Alan Woods. "We felt like there were goals to be had, so we really focused on pressing the ball and it yielded some good results for us. Obviously, it's great to be coming off a win entering SAA Tournament play. Centre is a very tough team, as we saw on Friday, but I think having seen them already, we'll be ready to go up there, give it our best shot, and let the chips fall where they may."
The eighth-seeded Petrels will take on the top-seeded, No. 14 Colonels for the second time in as many weeks on Saturday, this time in Danville, Kentucky, in the first round of the SAA playoffs. That game will take place Saturday at 1 p.m.
