Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with No. 11 Centre for much of the afternoon Saturday in Danville, Kentucky, at the SAA quarterfinals, taking the top-ranked team in the South Atlantic region deep into the second half with just a one-goal deficit. However, the homestanding Colonels scored the goal to put the game out of reach with 17 minutes remaining and the Stormy Petrels ended their season with a 3-12 overall mark.
Centre took the lead early, tallying the opening goal in the sixth minute. However, the Petrels did not allow another goal in the first half, despite being outshot 18-2 over the course of the stanza. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Craig came up with a huge game for her team in what turned out to be her final collegiate outing. She recorded eight saves in the nine shots on goal faced in the first half. Senior midfielder Jessie Gregerson fired a shot that forced a save from Centre goalkeeper Olivia Alford late in the half, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Craig continued to make save after save in the second half, adding eight more stops to her ledger on nine more shots on goal. The Petrels clung to the single-goal deficit until the 73rd minute, when Tori Dillard scored on a long, looping shot over the head of Craig. With the Colonels continuing to outshoot Oglethorpe 20-2 over the course of the second half, including 9-0 on goal, the Petrels were unable to work their way back into the game and fell 2-0 in the end.
Craig finished with a whopping 16 saves on 18 shots-on-goal faced. The 16 saves served as a season high for the senior keeper. Senior midfielder Claire Stauber fired two shots over the course of the game, leading the Petrels in that category.
"I was proud of the way this team played today," said Head Coach Alan Woods. "Our team, especially our seniors, gave it all they had and they can be proud of their performance against one of the best teams in the country. Sarah was incredible all afternoon long, giving us a chance to stay in the game."
The Petrels finish the season 3-12 but played better as the season went on, with two of those wins coming late in the year. The Petrels also quickly improved in their performance against the Colonels, as Centre beat them 5-0 at the Oglethorpe Track and Field just over a week ago.
