Sewanee Uses Last-Second Goal to Defeat Women's Soccer, 3-2

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team gave a valiant effort Saturday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, remaining tied with Sewanee into the final seconds of the SAA contest between the two teams. However, the visiting Tigers scored the game-winning goal with just 17 seconds remaining, propelling themselves to a 3-2 win. The loss drops the Stormy Petrels to 1-6 on the season overall and 0-2 in SAA play.

The Petrels fell behind Sewanee 2-0 in the early-going, as the Tigers scored markers in the 24th and 31st minutes. However, the Petrels came storming back on the efforts of freshman forward Kayla Trice. She got on the end of a long pass from freshman midfielder Chase Cabana and beat the entire Sewanee defense down the left sideline before firing a shot past Tiger goalkeeper Samantha Bourgeois in the 39th minute, cutting the Sewanee lead in half. Then, she got on the end of a similar pass from sophomore forward Precious Buddington down the right side and beat the Tiger defense in exactly the same way to tie the contest at 2-2 in the 44th minute.

Neither team seemed able to tally a potential game-winner in the second half, but Sewanee ratcheted up the pressure as the period continued. They outshot the Petrels 9-1 over the course of the second half. Still, it looked as though the two teams were destined for overtime. However, the Tigers finished on a free ball in the box in the 90th minute, taking a 3-2 lead and giving the Petrels no chance to get back an equalizer.

The Tigers outshot Oglethorpe 18-3, including 10-2 in shots on goal. However, sophomore goalkeeper Tabitha Floyd made seven saves, allowing the Petrels a chance to come back. Sewanee took nine corner kicks to Oglethorpe's one.

"This was a tough loss for us, as it seemed like we were headed to overtime," said Oglethorpe head coach Wes Anania. "It's never easy to lose in the final 20 seconds. However, Sewanee had been applying the pressure for a large chunk of the second half. It's really hard to hang on for that much time when you're not seeing much of the ball. We'll look to rebound next weekend."

The Petrels welcome Rhodes to the Oglethorpe Track and Field Friday at 4:30 p.m. before closing out their home SAA schedule with a visit from Hendrix Sunday at noon.
