Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team played their second consecutive game against a Division II team Tuesday afternoon, as they took on Brevard at a neutral site in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Just like on Saturday against USC Aiken, the Stormy Petrels held their own over the first half, trailing the Tornados just 1-0 at halftime. As the Petrels tired, though, Brevard pulled away in the second half for a 4-0 win, dropping the Petrels to 0-3 on the season.
The Petrels played well defensively over the opening 45 minutes of the contest, limiting the Tornados to four shots on goal out of their 12 total. Freshman goalkeeper Deidra Alexander was able to make stops on three of them, but Brevard got on the board in the 29th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until halftime.
Brevard came out in the second half with goals in quick succession, scoring in the 47th and 50th minutes and putting the Petrels behind the 8-ball, 3-0. Oglethorpe responded with better attacking play in the second period, as they fired six shots and put a couple of them on target. The Tornado goalkeeper stopped both of those shots, however. Brevard tallied a final goal in the 88th minute, leading to the final scoreline.
The Petrels got solid midfield play from junior Celina Kassam and freshman McKenzie Simpson, with Kassam firing two shots and putting one on goal. Junior midfielder Caitlin Tabilog also fired a pair of shots. Alexander totaled four saves over 54 minutes of play while sophomore Tabitha Floyd finished with three over 36 minutes.
For the game, Brevard outshot the Petrels 22-8, including 11-3 on goal. They also won six corner kicks to Oglethorpe's one.
"This was a tough loss," said Oglethorpe head coach Wes Anania, "but our midfield play was a bright spot. McKenzie and Celina really worked well together today, and I think that bodes well for us down the road. Our goal is to continue getting better each and every time out, and we'll have another chance at that next week."
The Petrels will return home on Wednesday, Sept. 14, to take on Bryan, an NAIA opponent, at 5 p.m. After that, they'll head back out on the road to face Judson (Alabama) before starting SAA play on the road at Centre on Saturday, Sept. 24.
