Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team closed out their regular season Tuesday night in Macon, falling to the homestanding Wesleyan Wolves 2-0 to finish the campaign 4-10-1 overall. The Stormy Petrels will now get set for their SAA Tournament opener Saturday night against Birmingham-Southern.
The Petrels got off to a rough start, as Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead early on in the match. In the ninth minute, the home side scored to give themselves a 1-0 advantage. The Petrels had the better of play for most of the first half after that, though, as they outshot the Wolves 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes. They forced Wesleyan goalkeeper Carlee Dykes into a pair of saves in the process, but the home side still had a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the shot count was more even, with Wesleyan outshooting Oglethorpe 12-10, but the Petrels had several chances, as they forced Dykes into four second-half saves. The Wolves were able to put the game away in the 82nd minute, though, as they bagged their second goal and made it 2-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining.
For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Wesleyan 18-15, including an even 6-6 mark in shots on goal. Oglethorpe took five corner kicks to the Wolves' three, as well, but Dykes made six saves on the evening to keep Oglethorpe scoreless.
Oglethorpe freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Bolas finished with four saves on the evening, while senior midfielder Celina Kassam fired four shots.
"Tonight didn't go like we would've liked," said Oglethorpe head coach Wes Anania, "but we move forward to the SAA Tournament now. We've got a big game against Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, and we played them very close at our place a few weeks ago, so I'm excited to see how we compete against them in the tournament."
The Petrels will hold the No. 7 seed and will take on the No. 2 seed Panthers Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern from Birmingham.
