Box Score The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team had a tough afternoon Friday against the home standing Greensboro Pride in North Carolina. The Lions scored 16 goals within the first three periods of the game before the Stormy Petrels could get on the scoreboard, and the Petrels fell to Greensboro 19-2.
It was a rough start to the game for the Petrels as the Pride scored 7 goals in the first period of the game, giving them a 7-0 lead going into the second period. The second period was not much better for the Petrels, as the Pride scored 5 more consecutive goals, giving them the 12-0 lead going into the half. The Pride scored again a little over 10 seconds into the second half, bringing their lead to 13-0. At the end of the third period, the Petrels found themselves down 16-0.
The Petrels got their first goal of the game with 7:45 left in the fourth period, as senior attackman Andrew Houghton tallied an unassisted marker to bring the score to 19-1. The visitors finished the scoring, as well, as sophomore middie Tyler Stridiron converted off an assist from attackman Nathaniel Gillespie.
Freshman goalie Sean Merritt recorded 18 saves on 37 shots on goal. Sophomore defenseman Andrew Kwapil forced 3 turnovers for the Petrels, as well.
The Petrels committed 32 turnovers to the Pride's 14, were outshot 54-22, and recovered 29 ground balls to their opponent's 47. The two teams both played a physical game with a total of 5 penalties.
"This afternoon was obviously a tough game for us," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young, "but we have to bounce back on Sunday. We'll look to end this road trip on a high note against Methodist."
The Petrels will stay in North Carolina to take on Methodist Sunday at noon from Fayetteville before coming back to take on Huntingdon on their home turf Wednesday at 7 p.m.
