ATLANTA—Oglethorpe senior guard Malachi Dooley eclipsed 1,000 career points after two stellar games this week and for his efforts has been named Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week. The award marked Dooley's second of the season after he previously won it November 24 in the third week of the season.
Dooley opened the week with 23 points and five rebounds to help the Stormy Petrels get a win in their SAA opener against Berry. The scoring effort moved him 27 points away from 1,000, and he reached that 27th point Friday night against Baptist University of Florida with a deep 3-pointer midway through the second half that electrified the crowd during a Petrel run that put the win away.
Dooley's 32 points Friday matched his career high and marked his third 30-point effort in the last four games. He also connected on 8-of-10 3-pointers, becoming only the sixth player in Oglethorpe history to connect on eight threes in a game.Â
Dooley is averaging 24 points per game on the year and 29.5 over the last four games.
The Stormy Petrels are on a short break for finals week but return to action next week with a nonconference home game against Caltech Wednesday, Dec. 17.
