A.Z. Johnson was Oglethorpe’s leading scorer during his time with the Petrels, racking up 1,597 career points.

Johnson taught and coached for 11 years at Chamblee High School and 21 years at Tucker High School. During those 32 years he became one of the most successful high school basketball coaches Georgia with an overall record of 501-274. In 2012, Tucker High school dedicated their basketball court to Johnson.

Johnson served in the US Army during World War II. He and his wife Mary had five children and seven grandchildren. 

Johnson was a recipient of the 1997 Atlanta Tipoff Club Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2000 the Georgia State Legislature passed a resolution honoring him. He passed away on January 25th, 2000.
