Lucien “Bird” Wellborn Hope was a star catcher and all-around Petrel.

Hope began his freshman year in 1917, but left the university to serve in World War I. He returned in 1919, and was vice president of the O Club, managed the 1918 football team, and was also the baseball team captain his sophomore season. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. The 1921 yearbook recorded him as one of the best catchers in the south.

He was a member of the Mythical All-Southern nine of the 1920 season, SIAA players who were regarded as the best of the best.
