Heywood Monk Clement was a well-rounded athlete in all four years he attended Oglethorpe, serving as a coach and trainer on top of being a student-athlete.

Clement was a member of the varsity basketball and track teams and a trainer for the varsity football team. In 1930 he coached the freshman basketball and baseball teams, leading the basketball team to an undefeated season. Before settling into those roles, he played on the freshman baseball, basketball, and football teams. Although the varsity basketball team struggled, Clement was noted to be an excellent guard, making scoring difficult for opponents. He also played center.

Clement was one of only two men to letter in track and field in the late 1920s/early 1930s. The team nicknamed him Apollo for his skills in javelin and discus. In 1929 he won third for both events at a meet in competition with Emory, Georgia Tech, and University of Georgia.

Clement was also an editor for the Stormy Petrel Newspaper, secretary of the De Molay club, and a member of student council, Theta Kappa Nu fraternity, the Blue Key National Honor Society, and the Carolina club. He was voted Best All-Around Athlete in 1928 and was president of his sophomore class.

His younger brothers Hugh and Edwin also became star Oglethorpe athletes.
