On January 24, 1980 an article appeared in the Dekalb Extra section of the Atlanta Journal Constitution “Oglethorpe is awash in basketball tradition.” “Oglethorpe University was a terror in the small basketball world—1959 (GIAC)Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champs, 1961 (NAIA)National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District champs and 3rd place nationally in the 1963 (NCAA) National Collegiate Athletic Association College Division.”
Not until Athletic Director and Coach Jack Berkshire’s arrival in 1976 did those past successes seem like a reality again. With Oglethorpe’s new found commitment to athletic success Berkshire went about rebuilding a successful program and a winning team. The 1979-80 team improved on the success of the prior year’s squad who qualified for the District 25 playoffs.
The 1979-80 squad finished the season 23-7, the second most wins in OU history, were GIAC Tournament Champions and were the top ranked team in the NAIA District 25.
