Before Oglethorpe, Agel was a pitcher for Ridgewood High School in his hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey. He joined the army right out of high school and became a sergeant before being honorably discharged, then enrolled at Oglethorpe.

Agel spent many years as a volunteer in the archives of the school’s library, and received the Samuel Talmage Award in 1987 and an honorary doctor of humane letters degree in 2013. Agel was the president of Oglethorpe’s National Alumni Association from 1976-1977, and a member of the university's board of trustees from 2008 until the time of his death. He endowed the J. Frederick Agel, Sr., Achievement Scholarship which is awarded annually to a rising senior who has contributed significantly to student life.

Agel passed away at age 88 on June 5th, 2016. Today, Oglethorpe awards the J. Frederick Agel, Sr. Endowed Scholarship annually to two rising seniors who have contributed significantly to student life and have maintained a GPA worthy of Latin honors.
