Steve Loureiro was a prime example of a Stormy Petrels and has dedicated his life to baseball.

Before Oglethorpe, Loureiro played for the Cobb County travel team East Cobb Astros.

In 1998, Loureiro broke the single season batting record previously set by fellow hall-of-famer Tim Crowley, and Luke Appling before him. He currently holds one of the best season and career batting averages, number of hits and RBIs in a single season, career walks, and career on base percentage. He was a 1996 All-SCAC honorable mention, then earned All-SCAC in 1997 and 1998. Loureiro was a two-time member of the Collegiate Baseball America Players to Watch List and an All-South honoree.
As of 2024, he holds the No.16 spot for single season batting average in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).

After graduating with a bachelor’s in history, Loureiro earned his master's in teaching and was an assistant coach with Oglethorpe’s baseball team. He started his professional career in Europe, playing on several championship teams. Loureiro returned to the United States when he was drafted by the Evansville Otters.

“I am very thankful to God, my parents and grandparents for encouraging me to attend Oglethorpe University, a utopia of sorts that has given me lasting memories and great people that I will always remember,” Loureiro said in a 2008 Appen Media publication regarding his induction to the hall of fame.

Loureiro is currently a middle school teacher in Forsyth County and the Pitching Coordinator and 17U Coach for the Atlanta Blue Jays travel baseball program. He and his wife have one son.
