After graduation, Crowell served in the U.S Navy during World War II. He returned home and served as Porterdale, Georgia’s athletic director from 1948-1970. He coached youth teams, managed the city’s swimming pool and golf course, coordinated the adult baseball and softball leagues, and served as Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 207. From 1950-60 he served on the Porterdale City Council, and from 1960-1965 he was mayor of Porterdale. Crowell was a founding member of the Newton County Recreation Commission and was instrumental in organizing the athletic program for Newton County's junior high schools. He retired in 1985 and focused on volunteer work/community outreach. The city of Porterdale has a park named in his honor.
