Charlie Owens   attended Oglethorpe his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He earned a BS in mathematics. His fondest memories include baseball and math and physics classes with Dr. Goslin. He defeated Notre Dame 2 to 0 his sophomore year. "I lost the first game with Jacksonville pitching a complete game but won the second game by pitching the 17th, 18th, and 19th innings,"  Owens recounted. "My senior year we were 20 and 5; I was 10 and 1."

After Oglethorpe , Owens was hired by Pace Academy. He taught math for 50 years and was head of the baseball program for 42 years. By the end of his career, they had 513 wins and were State Champions in '93, '94, and '95. In 1996 Owens was the NFCIA Baseball Coach of the Year. In 2009 Pace named the baseball field “Charlie Owens Field” in his honor.
