Hall of Fame
Born and raised just up the road from Oglethorpe, in Kennesaw, Julia attended North Cobb High School where she played basketball and golf. As she progressed through high school her passion for golf grew, inspired and nurtured by family friend and mentor Tammy Carter Richards. By her senior year she knew that she wanted golf to be part of her college life. Having met Coach Jim Owen, she elected to attend Oglethorpe University and join the Stormy Petrels’ small but ambitious women’s golf program. (She has since been inducted into the North Cobb Hall of Fame for her contributions to Women’s Golf in 2013.) Julia loved her time at Oglethorpe.
Outside of class, she was an enthusiastic contributor to campus life, a proud member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, and a leader of the OU Dance Team. Her passion and commitment to golf allowed her talent for the game to flourish. As a leader of the fledgling women’s golf program, Julia was Captain three out of four years, played in over 40 tournaments, practiced a minimum of four days a week for five hours at a time, and spent countless hours travelling to tournaments all over the South.
She was the first to:
• Start in every tournament, and play all four consecutive years for Women’s Golf at Oglethorpe University
• Attend Division III National Championships for Oglethorpe University since the university’s origin in 1835, in addition to attending two years consecutively
• Holds record for tournaments won in OU Women’s Golf
• 2-Time All American
• 4-Time SCAC Honoree
• 4-Time Top 10 Finisher at the SCAC Conference Championships
• 1st Prize Winner at La Zagaleta, Pro-Am Golf Tournament with European Seniors Tour Professional Jeff Hall in 2006
• Best Buy Women’s Charity Classic Participant in conjunction with the LPGA 2007
She is the first Lady Golfer to be inducted into the OU Hall of Fame.
After graduating from OU, Julia set out to explore the world. She lived and traveled in Australia for one year before moving to London, where she has resided since. She married Oglethorpe alum and long-time boyfriend Matt Suggett in a private ceremony on top of The Rock of Gibraltar in 2010, and has since pursued a career in the creative Architect & Interior Design industry in London. She still plays golf competitively in the UK, and the sport continues to take her around the world: she has now teed-it-up in 6 countries on 3 continents, and doesn’t plan on stopping swinging any time soon.Â
