John Columbus Bell was a three-year varsity started on Oglethorpe’s football team, a varsity basketball player for three years, and was a manager for the freshman baseball team during his sophomore year. Bell graduated with a bachelor’s degree in literature and journalism.

Bell was a member of Alpha Lambda Tau fraternity.

In 1926, halfback Bell recorded a 42 yard touchdown run while "Nutty" Campbell connected for the game-winning extra point against Georgia Tech. Three years later, Bell duplicated his heroics with a 64-yard touchdown gallop in the fourth quarter to break a 7-7 tie and top the Georgia Bulldogs 13-7 on Sanford Field in Athens on September 28, 1929. He was named to the All-SIAA team in 1929.
