William Elmer George was a letterman in football, baseball and track. He earned his bachelor's degree in education.

Just after graduation, George served in the United States Army during World War II, fighting in the Pacific theater. After his service, George worked in the electrical business for over ten years. Then he became city manager of Griffin, GA and later Executive Director with the Georgia Municipal Association.

George was extremely dedicated to his community, serving as the president of the Griffin Kiwanis Club, was on the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities, a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Griffin and Atlanta, secretary of the Local Hospital Authority, and served on many committees dedicated to Georgia's growth. He also taught Sunday school at his local church and was a Boy Scouts leader.

George was born on October 6th, 1915 in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He and his wife Ella two children and several grandchildren. George passed away aged 96 on August 13th, 2012.
