William Johnson “Jay” / “Cap” Boswell was captain of Oglethorpe’s first ever football, basketball, and baseball teams. He and served as the Vice President of the Student Athletics Association from 1917-1918 and was a member of the track team in 1919.

In 1916, Boswell was named captain of the inaugural men’s basketball team and played as a right forward, participating in the school’s first ever athletic competition. In 1917, Boswell was named captain of the inaugural football and baseball teams. He was a key player in the school’s first football game, which resulted in victory.

Boswell was also a member of the track team his junior year, which saw Oglethorpe make their first appearance at an S.I.A.A meet in 1919. He was also manager of the baseball team that year.

The 1920 Yamacraw described him as “ a rare specimen... the only man to ever captain three different teams while at Oglethorpe.”
