Frank “Frankie/Ben/Benda” Martin Zelencik Sr. was an offensive lineman and tight end, earning a Bachelor of Science.
Zelencik appeared in nine games over his career. He was a member of Alpha Lambda Tau fraternity, the O Club, and the Yankee Club. Immediately following graduation, Zelencik played professionally for the Chicao Cardinals (today the Arizona Cardinals), wearing #12.
His younger brother Anthony has also been inducted to the Oglethorpe Hall of Fame. Frank has also been inducted to the East Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame.
Zelencik graduated from East Chicago Roosevelt High School in 1930 and after his football career was employed at Inland Steel for over 35 years. He served as Chief Petty Officer at the Great Lakes Naval Station and served in the Navy during WWII from 1942-1945. He was a member of Zenska Jednota, American Legion Post #20 Crown Point, and St. Mary Catholic Church for 54 years.
Zelencik was born November 11th, 1912 in Indiana. He and his wife Olga had three children; Mary Ann, Frank Jr., and Fabian. He passed away on March 8, 2003.
