Robert "Bobby" Thomas Sexton was born in Opelika, Alabama, on June 12, 1942. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Oglethorpe University.

He played Basketball for Oglethorpe all four years and baseball for his latter two. He was a member of the LeConte Society for two years, president of the Honor Court, and member of the Boar's Head Fraternity. Sexton was awarded the 1964 David Hess Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in athletics. He posted the highest ever career rebounding average with 11.79 and was a member of Oglethorpe's fifth all-time winningest team.

Sexton met his wife, Jane Lee, on campus. They were married on September 16, 1965. Bobby and Jane Lee raised two children, Mont and Jodie, and two grandchildren: Emma and Abigail.

He died on March 14, 2019, aged 76.
