Ike Cousins was a tri-sport athlete, briefly playing basketball in 1926 when the sport was just getting started at Oglethorpe. Cousins excelled in baseball and football, as well as in the classroom.

Cousins was a member of the football team that won back-to-back conference championships in 1924 and 1925. In addition to sports, Cousins was highly involved around campus. He was a member of the O Club, the Tech High Club, and Alpha Lambda Tau Fraternity.

In 1958, Cousins and his son Tom founded Cousins Properties which has become one of the largest equity Real Estate Investment Trusts in the country. Oglethorpe's I.W. “Ike” Cousins Center for Science and Innovation was completed in 2019 in honor of the man himself and the Cousins Foundation which spreads philanthropy throughout Atlanta today.
