Hall of Fame
Maxwell "Red" Ivey was given the "Most Athletic" superlative in 1943 and dedicated his life to student-athletes.
Ivey was the Sports Editor for the Yamacraw Yearbook. He earned the nickname "Red" from his brightly colored hair.Â
After graduation, he became an assistant coach at Bass High School under fellow Oglethorpe hall-of-famer Swede Phillips. After Bass he went on to coach and teach at Murphy High School here in Atlanta (today, the school is named East Atlanta Phoenix Academy) and led the football team to the state championship title in 1953. Ivey later became a principal at Brown High School (today the middle school Herman J. Russell West End Academy), then was promoted to Athletic Director for Atlanta City Schools.Â
He passed away in 1988 after a battle with cancer.Â
