George Douglass “Doug” Alexander was an All-American basketball player in his four years at Oglethorpe. Although originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Alexander began his basketball career at nearby Cross Keys High School.

Alexander was a member of the Boar’s Head club and the LeConte Honorary Society. In 1968 he set a program record for career points and was named an Honorable Mention Little All-America. He was named MVP of the 1966 Oglethorpe Invitational (now the Jack Berkshire Classic) after leading the Petrels to their seventh straight tournament win. 

Alexander was a member of the university’s board of trustees. He was a co-founder of Alexander-Hass fundraising group and raised money to bring the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta, and worked with presidents Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush. He also founded several non-profits. Alexander was the head coach for Oglethorpe’s 1972-73 men’s basketball team.
He passed away at age 74 on April 6, 2020.
