Franklin Wayne Dobbs was a guard on the men’s basketball team(s) now known for their development of Coach Garland Pinholster’s wheel offense, and the highly successful 1958-59 team. He also coached the basketball “B” team.

Dobbs was also a member of the baseball team, the Who’s Who’s in American Colleges and Universities honor society, the Boar’s Head council, the Blue Key honor society, the yearbook staff, and the O Club. He played tennis freshman year.
He was president of the 1960 O Club, treasurer of his sophomore class, vice-president of his junior class, vice-president of the 1960 boar’s head council, chairman of the interactivity committee, and vice-president of the 1961 student council.

Dobbs coached basketball and baseball at Belmont, then three seasons of basketball at George Washington University (1967-70). He then served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt before becoming head coach from 1976-1979. He was named the SEC Coach of the year in 1979.

Dobbs was born in Smyrna, Georgia where he remained an active member of the community throughout his life. He passed away February 7th, 2016 at the age of 75.
