Oglethorpe University

Howard Axelberg was a member of the university’s last football team.  

After graduation, Axelberg served in the Navy during World War II, working his way up to first lieutenant before being honorably discharged. He later graduated from Atlanta Law School, and spent his entire career with Liller, Neal, Battle, and Lindsey Advertising. Upon his retirement, Axelberg was chairman and CEO of the company. He also served as the advertising chairman for United Appeal (United Way), was a two-time president of the Metropolitan Atlanta Better Business Bureau, and chairman of the Southeast Council of the American Association of Advertising Agencies 

In 1976 Axelberg was honored with the Atlanta Advertising Club's Silver Medal award for Lifetime Achievement. He was a president of Oglethorpe’s alumni association and was a member of the board of trustees for 23 years.  

Axelberg passed away on October 14th, 2004, just 12 days shy of his 86th birthday.
