Russ Churchwell was one of the most successful basketball players in Oglethorpe history, setting several school and conference records over a four-year varsity career.

In his senior season, Churchwell broke the SCAC record for career points. He remains in second place with 1,894 points. This record held for over ten years, until it was beaten in 2018. Churchwell still holds the Oglethorpe record for career points, points in a single game, total field goals made, and remains the highest scoring freshman. He also holds spots in the top five for career scoring average, total blocks, free throws made, and career double-doubles.

Churchwell was named the 2000-01 SCAC Newcomer of the Year and an all-conference honorable mention. He was named to the all-conference second team in 2001, 2004, and 2005 and the second team in 2002 (he did not play during the 2002-03 season, and took a fifth year at Oglethorpe). Churchwell was a four-time SCAC academic honor roll honoree. He was also named a 2004-05 D3Hoops.com All-America Honorable Mention.

Churchwell was an RA for three years and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, Omicron Delta Kappa fraternity, and was the president of his junior class. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s in biology and studio art.

Currently, Churchwell serves as Facility Medical Director and Director of Anesthesia at Kettering Health Hamilton in Hamilton, Ohio. He and his wife Jessica Fugett (‘06) were married in 2010 and have continued an active lifestyle with their four children.
