Adrian Harold “Sparky” Maurer was a running back and excellent team captain and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in commerce.

Maurer led the 19224 and 1925 teams to back-to-back SIACC championship titles. In 1923 he was named to the SIACC first team and the All-Southern second team. The 1925 Yamacraw claimed that his most notable moment on the Oglethorpe football team was scoring the last-minute winning touchdown in the 1923 game against Mercer.

Maurer was a member of the Student-Faculty Committee, the O Club, Boar’s Head honorary fraternity, and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

After graduation, he played professionally for the Newark bears, but the team ceased operations after only five games of the 1926 season due to financial issues. Maurer decided to end his football career with the team, citing in a 1927 Brooklyn Daily Eagle interview that football was too expensive, even with a high salary.

Maurer was born in 1901 in Canton, Ohio and passed away on May 4th, 1943 in San Francisco.
