He also played on the football team, but Coach Anderson only put him him when he knew Turk's pitching arm would be out of harm's way. Howwever, in 1918 he led the football team to a major win over Auburn. Turk was captain of the 1920 baseball team and over his career struck out over 100 opponents, only allowing roughly 50 hits.He received multiple All-Southern honors in 1919.

After graduating, Turk spent one season pitching for the minor league team the Columbia Comers. Turk also spent one season in Major League Baseball, as a pitcher for the Washington Senators in 1922. In his one season with the Senators he posted a 6.94 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched with one strikeout.

Turk was born May 2nd, 1898 in Homer, Ga. He and his wife Lula Tennie Spencer were married on June 27th, 1922 and they had two children: Lucas Newton Turk III and Sarah Lulabeth "Beth". He died at 95 years old on November 1, 1994 in his hometown.
