Jack Berkshire served Oglethorpe as head men’s basketball coach from 1976 to 1998 and recorded a 315-97 record. Two of his teams and several of his mentees have been inducted into Oglethorpe’s athletics hall of fame. He also served as athletics director from 1976 until his retirement in 2002.

During his time at Oglethorpe Berkshire led the Stormy Petrels through the transition into the NCAA and SCAC eras, their first ever SCAC championship, and major athletics program growth. Under Berkshire's leadership, the program increased from six sports to the current 14 sports sponsored. Gender equity was achieved during this growth with seven women's sports currently offered.

Berkshire graduated from Mississippi State University in 1962 where he was captain of two SEC championship basketball teams. Senior year he was named the SEC Best Defensive Player and Outstanding Senior Athlete at MSU.

Oglethorpe’s annual men’s basketball tournament was renamed the Jack Berkshire Classic in his honor. He continues to attend games and support Oglethorpe athletics.
