Thomas Norwood was a Stormy Petrel through and through.
Norwood was a member of the Rat Court and O Club and played on the basketball and baseball teams.
He was co-captain of the basketball team and a member of the famed 1958/59 squad. His senior season posted a 9-3 record. On the diamond he was a catcher and pitcher for Oglethorpe’s small squad.
In 1963 Norwood received the David Hess award, and honor given to students that letter in varsity sports and participate/assist the entire athletics program. Norwood was cited as a both a gracious winner, and a gracious loser.
Norwood was in minor league baseball from 1962-1966, recording 1,732 at-bats across the A and AA levels. His best season was 1965 with the York White Roses, where he recorded 63 runs, 66 RBIs, 15 stolen bases, and seven homeruns. After his stint in the minors, Norwood returned to Oglethorpe as men’s basketball head coach for the 1969/70 and 1970/71 seasons.
Norwood was born January 26th,1940 in Decatur, Georgia.
